History of Microprocessor
• In 1971, the first executive Microprocessor 4004 was launched in the market by Intel company. Which was a 4-bit processor and was made up of 2300 transistors.
• In 1977, Intel launched the 8-bit Microprocessor 8085 in the market.
• In 1978, Intel launched the 16-bit Microprocessor 8086, which consisted of 29000 transistors.
• In 1993, Intel launched the Pentium series. It was a 32-bit microprocessor. It used 33 lakh transistors and was fabricated with CISC (complex instruction set computer) technology.
• Intel then introduced the Back 2 Back Pentium Pro (1995), Pentium II (1997), Pentium III (1999) and Pentium 4 (2000) in the market. All of them were equipped with a 32-bit microprocessor.
• In 2006-07 Intel launched its popular series Core-I. As a result, I3 has arrived in the market in 2006, I5 in 2011, I7 in 2016 and I9 in 2018. These are all 64-bit microprocessors.
If the parts of the microprocessor are divided according to the function, they will be as follows.
• Memory Unit (MU) – The function of an MU in a microprocessor is to store information related to its input and output instruction. Instructions we give to computers. They are stored in the MU before and after the instruction is executed. After that, the results are revealed.
• ALU (Arithmetic Logical Unit) – Both arithmetic and logical functions of microprocessor are performed by ALU. The arithmetic operation consists of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, etc. Logical operations are performed by logical gates AND, OR, NOT.
• Control Unit (CU) – All the instructions of the microprocessor are operated and controlled by the Control Unit. The CU decodes the instruction coming into the microprocessor. After decode, it directs its execution to the unit concerned. After execution, the task of editing its result in memory unit and beyond is also done by CU.
Working Principle of Microprocessor
• FETCH – When an Instruction I / P unit arrives in a microprocessor. This instruction is first stored in the memory unit. This action is called Fetching. In older generation computers, I / P Instruction was provided to the microprocessor by RAM. A Cache memory is provided in the modern generation microprocessor. I / P Instruction is pre-installed in Cache, which saves the arrival time of I / P Instruction and increases the processing speed of the processor.
• DECODE – Store instruction in a memory unit is read and understood by the control unit. ALU has to tell it what type of injection it is, differentiating it into instruction arithmetic or logical. The ALU works according to the instructions given by the control unit. This entire action is called the DECODE operation.
• EXECUTION – Fetch accesses the instruction ALU after being decode. ALU performs the task according to instruction. After ALU operation, its result is stored in the memory unit. This completed work is called EXECUTION.
• WRITE BACK – Result store in the memory unit. It is shown to us by the control unit as an output result. That is, according to the input instruction here, its result becomes Write Back. Therefore it is called the WRITE BACK verb.
